Abstract

This study aimed to adapt the Political Alienation Scale (PAS), developed by Cameroonian researchers, into Turkish and examine its psychometric properties. The PAS is a central concept for measuring the increasing political discontent observed in contemporary societies. The study was conducted using data collected via convenience sampling from two distinct participant groups (N=207 for EFA; N=300 for CFA). The structural validity analyses demonstrated that the final 10-item Turkish form of the scale exhibits a two-factor structure consistent with the theoretical framework: Political Inefficacy and Political Distrust. The fit indices obtained from both Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) (χ2/sd = 2.721, RMSEA = .076, CFI = .943, SRMR = .0605, CFI = .943, GFI = .947 ve AGFI = .907) confirmed that the model is acceptably aligned with the data. Convergent and discriminant validity criteria were also met. Criterion-related validity was supported by the fact that the total PAS scores exhibited positive (r = .46, p < 0,01) and significant correlations with Dean's Alienation Scale and negative (r = −.49, p < 0,01) and significant correlations with the Trust in Selected Officials Scale. Reliability analyses showed sufficient internal consistency (α = .795) for the total scale. These findings demonstrate that the PAS is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring political alienation within the Turkish context.
