Abstract

Equality between men and women is a fundamental prerequisite for the protection of human rights and the promotion of social justice, as well as for the promotion of development and peace. Throughout history and in different cultures, the relationship between men and women has been predominantly characterised by patriarchal norms. Gender discrimination is still a widespread problem worldwide, especially in South and East Asia. In Iran, the position of women in society has come under increased scrutiny since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Gender discrimination persists in Iran, where women are not granted the same rights as men and male superiority is often accepted.

The aim of this study is to examine the perspectives and experiences of Iranian students enrolled at Erciyes University in relation to gender discrimination. In particular, the thoughts and experiences of women in relation to gender equality will be explored. To achieve this, an in-depth analysis will be conducted using qualitative research methods.

The research involves conducting group interviews with 11 Iranian students enrolled at Erciyes University. The qualitative research method is used to delve deep into the experiences, thoughts and emotions of individuals. This method provides an effective means of understanding participants' perspectives and shedding light on their experiences. The results of the study show that Iranian students at Erciyes University have a high level of awareness of gender discrimination. Participants pointed out instances of discrimination faced by women in Iran in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, custody and travel. In addition, an increased awareness of women's low social status and their limited access to equal opportunities in the workplace was noted. These findings underscore the urgent need for the Iranian government to actively support women's rights and work towards gender equality. By drawing attention to the research findings, policy makers and society at large can be prompted to create greater awareness of women's rights and the need for gender equality. Ultimately, this study aims to shed light on Iranian students' perceptions of gender discrimination in Iran, with the overall goal of raising awareness and initiating social change in this area.
